How it works
When Bright: the liquid crystal molecules without chiral agents are anchored by alignment layer, and the liquid crystal molecules are arranged almost perpendicular to the Glass substrate. The dichroic dye is perpendicular to the Glass substrate with the liquid crystal, and the dye less absorbs the light and appears bright.
When Dark: the liquid crystal molecules parallel the glass substrate due to the electric field force. The upper and lower substrates are parallel and aligned, and the two cells are orthogonally superimposed. At this time, the absorption directions of the dye liquid crystal are orthogonal to each other. According to Malus's law, the incident light is almost completely absorbed, showing a dark state.
